Course Description

This course is intended for law enforcement personnel who would be assigned to conduct death investigations.  

Topics relate to all types of deaths, to include: 

  • Homicides
  • Suicides
  • Accidents 
  • Suspicious, sudden, or unexpected deaths  
The course is intended to equip the criminal investigator with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct a professional death investigation.  Included in the agenda are presentations concerning the detection and recovery of buried bodies, the identification of human remains, and the determination of how, when and where the victim died, and who, if anyone, was responsible for their deaths.  All commonly encountered means of death are discussed including firearms, poison, sharp and blunt force, asphyxiation, and fire/explosions.  In the second week, students are exposed to a variety of formal and informal investigative techniques used to identify and develop suspects.


PROGRAM FEES

Attendees (once selected to attend) will be responsible for the cost of lodging which is $70.00 a night. You will book directly with the conference center. Program fee will be $250.00 per person that will be paid to DCI. You will also be responsible for meals at the state rate, $369 for the 2 weeks.  If commuting, you will need to pay a $7.00 day fee directly to Green Lake Conference Center, along with lunches ($12).  (Class begins at 8:30 am the first day so you may wish to stay on the Sunday night prior each week.  The Conference Center is open 24/7 for check-in).

Special Notes: Only full time certified officers from Wisconsin law enforcement agencies are eligible to attend.  In order to allow as many departments as possible to attend, only one officer will be accepted from each department.  No waiting list is carried forward.  Any interested agency should submit a new application for 2024.
