COURSE OVERVIEW
Save money and time! This unique two-day online synchronous learning experience is intended for those who supervise the investigation of sexual assaults. Sexual Assault cases are unique in a number of respects, including both the intimate nature of the crime itself, the often-devastating impacts on the victim survivor, and the battle against the many myths and misconceptions surrounding sexual assault that can derail an investigation, allowing offenders to escape accountability and offend again.
Supervisors are tasked with ensuring investigations of integrity and completeness and set the tone for investigations that are objective and thorough, following the evidence and developing corroboration to establish victim and witness credibility and the veracity of the allegations. In this four-module course, supervisor participants will develop a deeper understanding of the unique dynamics of sexual assault and connect those dynamics to the impacts that trauma has on the victim survivor. With this foundation, participants will explore concrete ways that law enforcement can better engage with victims to develop the most complete and accurate set of information, leading to robust corroboration and a solid verifiable case to take to the prosecutor. Specific investigation and supervision strategies are identified and applied to a case study activity, focusing on the leadership responsibilities and opportunities available to supervisors in these cases.
Using synchronous learning tools, participants will move through the course following a fast-paced agenda. Approximately 2 hours of pre-course reading is required and will be provided to participants in an email prior to the start of the course. During the 2-day online course, at various times throughout, participants will be on their own, viewing videos, listening to webinars and engaging in activities. Frequently throughout the two days participants will join together on Zoom to work in small groups or engage in large group facilitated discussions, gaining insight and knowledge from each other as well as the law enforcement subject matter experts who co-present with Assistant Attorney General Miriam Falk, a prosecutor with over 35 years of experience prosecuting sexual assault cases and nearly as long training law enforcement officers on these subjects. A survivor speaker will join the participants for a live presentation, as well.
There is no cost to attend - this course is funded by a federal grant.
